Remembering Tera

Sometimes when an animal we love is ill, recovery doesn't happen. It's those hardest good-byes of all... but times when we must think of the animal before ourselves, and we know that the kindest thing to do is to give them a release from their suffering...

Tera, you were a very beautiful and intelligent working dog, and a loyal and loving companion to your master, Rod. Woody, Two and I are enriched for having known and loved you, too.

Rest in Peace, beautiful girl. And thank you for keeping my dog (Woody) company at that Rainbow Bridge where you all wait for us on the Other side.

There are actually some fairly decent-sounding recipes out there utilizing Marshmallow Peeps (or would those be called "reci-Peeps" perhaps?). However, these experimental concoctions were born of the "Hmmm, what if...." genre of thinking that can lead to either really cool "happy accidents," or just utter weirdness. I'm afraid these fall into the latter category. So, kiddies, you are *not* encouraged to fix any Mac-n-Peeps or Peeps-burgers at home. Ai-yi-yi!!!

Our York Area Chamber of Commerce has another Adopt-A-Peep fund raiser this year. And, as you can see, I have adopted 2 Peeps (each egg contains a marshmallow Peep®). Last year, this promotion raised over $1,000 for the local Adopt-A-Pet program. And, like in 2008, this year's promo is in conjunction with our Peep Show.

An unknown snow plow operator clears off the parking area at the right of the local locksmith building. The weight of the powdery snow had been light at first; but as the sun came out, the snow became wetter, and heavier, and a little tougher to clear.

About 8:30 this morning, the wind had begun to kick up a bit, and teeny snowflakes began flying about, trying to cover everything...

About 1 o'clock this afternoon, the snow was getting seriously heavier... and travel laborious... We got about 6 inches of snow, total.

I don't know who this beautiful yellow Lab belongs to. It just watched us silently as we came out of the Hallmark store and started zooming down the sidewalk. Something in its face made me go back and try to catch a few photos. It was so focused on which store the Master would eventually step out of, though it watched us a little, too. No aggression, just quiet curiosity.

I'd been congratulating myself for basically staying pretty healthy this winter, when WHAMMO! I was hit with a nasty cold!

I felt like the proverbial death-warmed-over, and didn't go outside unless I absolutely had to... which meant for the two-ton poo dog chores, I was bundled up, and outside... and quickly back in bed once I got back indoors. As you can tell, I looked as rotten as I felt.

But most of the cold has vanished now, except for a little bit of coughing. Good meds, and good soup helped bring me back to the land of the livin'! And even if I'm not quite back to 100%, I certainly feel a lot better and much more cheerful!

One of the things I've been having my Service Dog practice doing is bringing me the cell phone when it rings. I have set the ring tone for it to "Funk" which roughly transfers out to Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music." The dog looks askance at the phone when that thing goes off. He knows it's the phone, but it's almost like he'd rather listen to the jaunty melody than grab the unit and give it to me!

Is that the phone?
Danged if it isn't!

Of Surf & Sketches...

One of the fellows who delivers food from a local restaurant, Mike, got a chance to go to Australia in the summer of 2008, and he tried surfing for the first time. He really liked it. And, of course, he discovered that I am an avid surfing watcher. I told him about, and showed him video footage of, Maverick's off the coast of California, where the waves get quite mighty! Mike says he likes to surf, but admits that would be way too much for him at this point! Anyway, one day, he delivered a dinner to a neighbor across the hall. He knocked on my door, and when there was no response, he left me this surf sketch.

Next time he delivered a dinner to me, he did another sketch for me while I was getting my money out for the payment. He noted that the surfer he drew was in big trouble, here:

Of course, I told him if his surfer would surf the tube instead of trying to just stay ahead of the lip, he might survive, so I switched the direction of the surfboard:

Yay for survival in monster waves! All things being relative, I wanted to see a BIGGER wave in a forthcoming sketch, so I figured I'd have a drawing all ready for Mike next time he brought me my sandwich! So I did a little silhouetted surfer zooming out of imminent danger on the face of this 45 ft. monster at Maverick's:
Alas, they were only temporary art, since they were on my message board... but thanks to my trusty camera, they are preserved for posterity!
